Laparoscopic Resection of a Hepatic Tumor in Segment VI Assisted by Intraoperative Ultrasound

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver neoplasm and a major
cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Laparoscopic liver resection has shown
relevant benefits compared to the open approach, including lower morbidity, reduced
surgical stress, and faster functional recovery. We present the case of a 78-year-old male
with HCC in segment VI, classified as early stage A according to the Barcelona staging
system, treated with non-anatomical laparoscopic segmentectomy assisted with
intraoperative ultrasound, with a favorable postoperative course, adequate pain control,
independent mobility, early oral intake tolerance, and discharge on postoperative day two. Histopathological evaluation confirmed grade III HCC with a 13-mm free margin. This
case supports the safety and efficacy of this technique in experienced centers.
