Meningoencephalitis due to human Herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) in a pediatric patient: case report.

Human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6) is a β-herpesvirus that can cause a range of clinical manifestations, from roseola to neurological complications such as meningoencephalitis. Its diagnosis remains challenging, and it is essential to initiate antiviral treatment to avoid complications. We report the case of a 1-year-old infant with a history of ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for hydrocephalus, who presented with retroauricular swelling that required shunt replacement. Staphylococcus epidermidis was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid and blood cultures, leading to the initiation of vancomycin therapy. Due to clinical deterioration, a meningitis panel was requested, which identified HHV-6. Treatment with ganciclovir was initiated without complications. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis to prevent neurological complications.
